The Good, The Bad and The Ugly?

The bad - Every single spot they biopsied last week has to come out. She has invasive ductal carcinoma (cancer) on both sides (the one we knew about initially and a new spot they found on the left side) and lobular carcinoma in-situ and a papilloma one on each side (pre-cancerous cells), so those areas have to come out too.

The good - Thank the Lord she got in to see her doctor that she has now. Without the MRI that Dr. Wallace ordered they never would have found the spot on the left or the other two pre-cancerous spots which could have been much worse. Also, the doctor said she's still in the very early stages of cancer (the new cancer on the left is in the same stage as the initial spot found on the right), so it's early.

The ugly - Not sure? Me? The title for the post just sounded good, but I've got nothing for this category.

Unfortunately we didn't hear any of the above news until after 4:30 yesterday. We spent nearly 3 hours doing pre-op appointments yesterday, some of which are now totally irrelevant, because surgery will be more complex than first anticipated and may get rescheduled all together because whatever she has done now will take longer than originally expected. She totally should have seen the doctor first, but the way they got scheduled in order to get her into pre-op the appointments got flip-flopped and thus, we found out the news late in the day after she'd had all her vitals done, met with the anesthesiologist, etc.

Mom is now trying to decide between a double mastectomy or multiple lumpectomies. She is really pissed off and upset, and rightfully so, and they want her decision on what surgery she wants to have TODAY.

All I have to say is that if you or someone you know ever gets diagnosed with breast cancer, make sure they have an MRI done because in my mom's case the MRI (and resulting ultrasounds and biopsies) found 3 additional bad things that the mammogram NEVER picked up.

I appreciate all the good thoughts and the prayers. I know you've been giving them for awhile, but if you can keep them up I'd appreciate it.

Oh, and Steve didn't get that job. They had really good feedback for him and said if the job market wasn't so oversaturated with people, including some very overqualified candidates who are desperate for jobs, the position would have been his. I still have hope something is going to come through soon.

  1. Thanks for the updates, both about Steve and your mom. We'll keep praying!
